How to Create a Marketing Plan Template

It is critically important for every business, whether big or small, to have a marketing plan in place in order to achieve success. Creating a marketing plan can seem like a daunting task, but a marketing plan template can make the process easier to tackle.

  1. First: Review marketing plan examples

Begin the process of creating a marketing plan template by collecting and reviewing several examples of marketing plans, ideally from companies providing similar products or services. Compile a list of sections that appear in all or most plans, such as the executive summary, customer analysis, competitor analysis, possible marketing strategies, advertising costs and company goals. Omit or add categories according the unique circumstances of your business and the purpose of your marketing plan. For example, a marketing plan can act as an internal strategy guide or supporting materials for a business loan application.

  2. Second: Construct an outline

Create a document with your chosen categories as headings, and organize your thoughts on those topics into subcategories, or subheadings. Consider the ordering of topics within the marketing template; the document should flow logically.

  3. Third: Think creatively

A marketing plan should communicate and reflect the characteristics that make a business special. Do not hesitate to include a section that you do not find in other sample marketing plans. Marketing is the element of business that encourages and rewards imagination and ingenuity.

  4. Fourth: Use the outline to compose a plan

Expound upon each outline heading and subheading to create a finished marketing plan. Consider assigning each section to a member of a team; different perspectives can conjoin to produce a more dynamic marketing strategy.
